New Rules Planned for School Vending Machines Nationwide

Adjusting health standards in school cafeteria food will do no good if kids can buy junk food from nearby vending machines. In fact, a report from the National Academy of Sciences estimated about $2.3 billion dollars of snack foods and beverages are sold annually in schools nation wide. New Rules for School Meals Aim at Reducing Obesity

The Obama administration, led by First Lady Michelle Obama, has announced changes to government-subsidized school meals. The new standards add more fruit and green vegetables while reducing the amount of salt and fat. The Hottest Food Trends of 2011

2011 was a great year for healthy foods. The Gluten Free movement picked up stem and became more widespread. Feds: Pizza Counts as Vegetable in School Lunch

The final version of the Congressional spending bill includes new regulations for school lunches which would count the tomato paste used on pizzas to count as a vegetable. This comes after new recommendations by the USDA propose stricter standards for lunches. Margo Wootan, a nutrition advocate at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, criticized Congress for putting special interest concerns ahead of public health, “making sure that two of the biggest problems in the school lunch program, pizza and french fries, are untouched.” Both the House and the Senate are expected to vote on this bill later this week. Here is a Government Grant that makes some sense. The Farm to School program along with the Dept. of education is giving grants to schools to plant Gardens. We like the idea of getting good food into schools and not just complaining about the bad food that are in schools. Every school should have a model of producing some kind of healthy food on premises with the help of students.
